The text and imagery in this piece come from books about the South after the Civil War- the boy is unnamed; he lived around the Savannah River after the end of the war, freed from slavery but now homeless and trying to peddle things to make a living.

The construction device was photographed recently, in Forsyth Park. One often sees these structures, meaning "mind the broken fixture, we know it's there, we'll fix it eventually"..
