I am using the genre of landscape painting to examine how multiple narratives can play out in a single environment. My subjects are chosen from the rural New England terrain: woods hemmed in by housing lots; fields, once farmed, crisscrossed by overgrown stonewalls; marshlands sandwiched between developed waterfront properties. These locations are linked by their peripheral, transitional and somewhat discarded status. Abandoned, but not inert, these landscapes are never static. They are constantly in flux, continually altered as their narratives evolve. My work proposes that the emotional residue of the communities that have passed through them, used them, exploited them and forgotten them becomes a tangible part of the environments themselves.
