"Getting Capital Hurts Like Bullets", 2008

tv footage, Duration Variable

NFS

“Getting Capital Hurts Like Bullets” is a piece that operates to point out the lack of “consumer-class” social emotion, most specifically : in response to the murder of Sean Bell in Queens, NY and to the acquittal of the police men who killed him, but, also to the various iterations of this power relationship present within many international contexts.
It uses the trademark “reveal” scene of ABC Disney’s “Extreme Makeover : Home Edition” and subverts it for civil protest. In re-appropriating the emotional response brought on by the gift of capital, replacing it with the pain of a race politic, dialogue about the cultural effects of hyper-capitalism and the commodification of emotions is opened up.
