Contact Regarding Availability

The series forms one part of a larger project entitled “The Love Affair” that examines the subject of eating disorders. The work seeks to emphasize the representational difficulties of a mental illness and challenges the stereotypical view of eating disorders perpetuated by the mass media. The series portrays a story of Sophia, who developed anorexia nervosa at the age of 31. Sophia’s illness started affecting son who begun self harming and developed an unhealthy relationship with food at the age of four.At first glance the photographed objects may seem insignificant but when put into the context of the series they become representations of key moments in the narrative of Sophia’s story. While the effects of the sickness can be visibly depicted the cause of the illness or the illness itself is invisible. Thus I treat these objects as physical artefacts and I use them to create my photographic vocabulary. By implementing a simple aesthetic to the photographs and juxtaposing it with the written information, I try to create a space allowing for multiple readings and interpretations of the work.
