"Edgar Allen Poe House" from the series Haunted Houses, 2010
Archival Pigment Print, Dimensions Variable
“Haunted Houses” is a survey of houses throughout the United States where ghosts are reported. I photographed using a large format camera and recorded first-hand oral ghost stories at each house. The project was inspired by Victorian ghost stories, written by women as a means of articulating domestic discontents. I am particularly interested in the connection between ghosts and houses, and how current inhabitants negotiate the history of their homes when ‘living’ with a ghost. Haunted Houses traverses diverse fields such as photography, cultural history, architecture, folklore, and the supernatural. A book version of the project, "Haunted Houses," was published in Fall 2010 by The Monacelli Press/Random House.
