The Oracle, 2008
Plywood, 30cm x 30cm x 56cm
NFS
Made out of thinly layered plywood, the Oracle is a sculpture portraying a large conch shell. The title implies that if one should listen closely enough, some kind of greater wisdom could be bestowed upon one, just as one as a child would search for the sound of the thrashing waves of the sea with a shell pressed to one's ear.
In contrast with the shell described in Golden's Lord of the Flies, which represents civilization and rationale, the Oracle regresses into ideas of the supernatural and mysterious.
