John Hancock's America, 2005

plywood, felt, artificial turf, phosphorescent stars and paint, 12" x 120" x 144"

This is a fictitious topographical map of the United States of America, where the land elevations are defined by the logo of John Hancock Mutual Insurance Company, which is a direct copy of the signature on the Declaration of Independence. I was struck by how one man's signature, especially one so relevant to our country's history, could be utilized to sell insurance.
