Gilded Crown for the Undocumented Construction Worker, 2015
collage, glitter on paper, 22" x 15"
Ornate jewelry and decorations of honor have historically symbolized power a.nd prominence to royalty, religious figures, high-ranking military personnel and fraternal organizations. These honors, associated with birth or exclusivity, have glorified the elite and promoted a hierarchical status.
I have co-opted this tradition to celebrate the WORK that marginalized laborers have been performing without recognition. Collages with elaborate crowns, necklaces and badges have been created to honor their work and bring visibility to their important contributions.
