Between May and September 2007, Art for Humans Gallery Chinatown (AFHGC) occupied a one-room art space on Chung King Road in what at the time was one of the “contemporary art world’s” hottest districts. Lead artist Paul McLean and his cohort Shane Kennedy produced a new high-quality show every week or two, featuring a roster of international, national and local artists, accomplished and emerging, who collectively showcased a spectrum of media, backgrounds and interests. The program also included art talks, screenings, improvisations, mobile interventions and performances. The entire enterprise was documented and re-presented online in archives, blogs, and on then-novel social media, garnering a smattering of reports and coverage. Art for Humans Gallery Chinatown’s strategic ad campaigns in the LA and art industry press, coupled with viral Internet attention, generated a relatively broad awareness of AFHGC that spanned unusually diverse demographic, from Beverly Hills to the blogosphere. Thousands of people attended the shows over the course of the project.
