The Garden (DETAIL), 2011
Madder dye on organic silk, Dimensions Variable
The Garden is made from organic silk that is pigmented with natural dyes and impregnated with beeswax. Each hand-sewn bag bears iconography of poppies, peonies or roses. The silk bags and six-pack rings are displayed on the floor, along with real bits of discarded aluminum foil. The work’s title contrasts single-use plastic with flowers, and it also refers to my own garden. To produce one of the dyes I used in this sculpture, I grew madder plants (a pre-industrial source of red pigment) and then processed their roots to make a red dye. From seed to harvest, this process takes 2-3 years.
