In 10,000 Steps (2007-2010, Oakland, CA), we developed unique collaborations among city agencies, non-profits and neighborhoods groups to better understand how diverse cultural communities used and identified with four historic urban parks. Roaming the city equipped with friendly uniforms and a whimiscal workcart made from re-used materials, we tended the parks’ psyche by collecting neighbors’ stories about culture, lost history, vanished architecture and local ecology. We spoke with new and long time residents of all ages and ethnicities. Project results led to an exhibition, a permanent installation and numerous community events.
