“Pyramid Shadows” was filmed in rural regions of Belarus in an overall search for portraits that personify the problematic of time in human experience emphasizing the time in which events take place.

The title “Pyramid Shadows” is inspired by Maria, a woman I met in a village on a rural road on the outskirts of Belarus. Maria worked for thirty years on the fields of rural Belarus. One political regime changed another, and many came and went during this time. For thirty years the landscape reaching far into the outlines of the earth demanded continuous toil. Maria had a large family. When they grew up, her three children moved away to big cities for urban employment. Her husband passed away shortly before her portrait was captured.

People like Maria living in remote regions of urban centres are of monumental worth surviving under the shadows of changing governments and political systems. More than anything they understand the authority of the natural environment and the fixity of physical space and what it means to human life.

Within the boundary of the frame the video portraits in “Pyramid Shadows” rely on the passage of time. Via this context of temporality, “Pyramid Shadows” strives toward a representation of an ethnographic gaze as a unifying principle against a horizon of plurality and change.
