MAL Figure No. 1, 2012
hand-dyed silk organza, 8" x 16" x 4"
A MAL figure is one that is locked within its own head. Self-sustaining and autonomous, a MAL figure is either unwilling or unable to interact with its surroundings, leaving it in a state of calm immobility. I depict MAL figures in this state to symbolize a part of the healing process, as mental focus and energy are important aspects of recovery. The figure is without gender, race, age or nationality, and able to be relatable and personified by each viewer as an individual. I utilize the spiral shaped head to evoke qualities of a snail, or nautilus—creatures that carry their shelters with them. This shape, along with one’s skin, provides protection for this mental space.
