Three Movements is a piece commissioned for Opalnest’s reScores series. The work is divided into three parts (or movements) each one relating to one of the three earthquake scenes featured in Sylvia Chang’s film entitled 20. 30. 40. These are key scenes for the development of the main characters in the film. The careful use of color and light aides to further pronounce their emotional state and of course differentiate them from one another. For this piece, the color information from each scene is translated into musical notes via their corresponding frequencies on the electromagnetic spectrum. The prominent colors of each scene are then used to set the fundamental note of each movement (i.e. 1 in E, 2 in G and 3 in B). The resulting movements are based on these tunings and the combination of the different color-notes in order to approximate the light and color schemes used in the actual scenes.
reScores no. one reinterprets the aural potentials of filmmakers from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, presented by contemporary intermedia and sound artists. Visitors are invited to slow down and experience sonic pieces within the dynamics of an Opalnest Project Space. Each piece is chosen to reveal the aural potential of the filmmakers, disregarding their given soundtracks, so listeners can provide their own impressions and perceptions. The sound works become an emotional abstraction of the director's aesthetic. The participating artists works across a broad spectrum of sound categories including electronics, classical compositions, field recordings, live improvisations, experimental music, minimalist soundscapes, noise, and site-specific installations.
