Colour pencil on paper, 36" x 44"
This drawing was made using coloured pencils. I repeatedly traced the line that forms the border between Northern and Southern Ireland, each time moving the border line over slightly on the page. The title refers to the total length of this border. Northern Ireland generally uses the Imperial system of measurement and the Republic uses the metric system.
It seems that this line is what the whole conflict in Northern Ireland has been about. The problem is, of course, a great deal more complex than a single, solitary line but I was prompted to create this image by the feeling that this form is now invisible (border checkpoints manned by the army have now disappeared) but still very much there in the imagination.
