Used motor oil was photographed to create petroleum (2009). In addition to describing the physical characteristics of oil the 12 panels of photographs also addresses a major theme of global politics. The assembled grid forms a wall of “black gold,” a common reference to crude oil because of its enormous value in our society. With its glistening finish, the piece becomes an oversized mirror reflect the viewers image. Seeing oneself implicates the person in the work and the politics of energy consumption implied by the subject matter. Looking closely at each print, one can also find a small self-portrait of the artist with the camera.
