Paying Homage to Buddha for Three Incenses, 2013
performance, video installation (single-channle, color, sound, loop); painting, hair on canvas, 55" x 63", 3m 55s
My father and I cut each other's hair, I then ground our hair into ash which would be the material I'd use in the following paintings. This ritual process shows how I prepare painting materials and incorporate leftover materials into subsequent works.
In the subsequent piece 'Envy and Vanish', I used the hair ash left from the performance to make paintings. Here I scraped the hair ash onto the canvas in layers creating a dark tonal image which glows like an animal's skin. A lineage exists in the materials used from the performance piece.
