"Trompe l'oeil" tricks the eye and is a set of techniques used by a magician to manipulate objects and make things appear and disappear. My father was an amateur magician who did rope tricks, card tricks, coin tricks and box tricks, making things appear and disappear. The "trompe l'oeil" of art, especially in painting, makes visible what was not there before. It is a way to enter into reality that is always elusive but which gives the illusion of having come close, if not all the way: to transmute matter, paint as a chemical substance, into something that dazzles and conveys meaning. This series is part of an installation dedicated to my father, Francis Parry (Parisi), who pointed the way to the delirious beauty of making things appear and disappear.
